Despite the recent differences over an energy deal with Russia, members of the ruling coalition say that the government is stable. Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, of the Democratic Party (DS), says the government is not facing a crisis, while G17 Plus officials whose leader Mladjan Dinkic earlier this week left the Russian energy agreement talks, claim the same. Ruling coalition members say there's no crisis "I don't think the government is in a crisis. What is new is that we had outvoting for the first time. But, governments worldwide function in the same way and I don't think this should cause any disturbance, or in any way spoil relations within the government," Sutanovac said, according to a Beta news agency report this Sunday. According to him, 2009 will hold many challenges and therefore the cabinet must strive to stabilize the country and avoid the world economic crisis. Asked why no DS officials attended their allies G17 Plus electoral assembly today, Sutanovac answered that he "could not say". Meanwhile, G17 Plus vice-president Verica Kalanovic says that her party "will not bring down the government, or do anything that would cause instability in the country". Asked about the absence of the Democrats from the G17 Plus gathering, Kalanovic said that while everyone received invitations, she assumed they failed to show because they had more important business in the government. Another party vice-president, Tomica Milosavljevic, said those absent from the event should explain it themselves. Milosavljevic also stated that he expects the government to persevere in the job that the citizens entrusted it to do, and added that G17 Plus has contributed, along with other pro-European forces, to Serbia "looking different today". Opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic also weighed in on the situation in the ruling coalition, by saying that he is ready to support the cabinet should G17 Plus decide to walk out, but only until the Russian energy deal has been completed.
