Opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic says the government will enjoy his support until it signs an energy deal with Russia. "We will not join the government, nor would we provide it with a quorum in parliament. But, this government, should Mladjan Dinkic leave it, would have our support only for as long as it takes for it to finish the business over the gas agreement with Russia," Nikolic told the Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. Nikolic supports govt. "over gas deal only" He added that the SNS – formed as an offshoot of the Serb Radical Party (SRS) several months ago – will not provide the Cvetkovic cabinet with minority support. "We will not join the government without elections. Even if they offered us to lead it, we would say, 'no'." "As far as the SNS is concerned, the government has agreed to sign the energy agreement, even if Dinkic leaves. I would recognize such a government for as many days as it takes to sign the agreement with Russians. Until December 23, when an energy summit is taking place in Russia. After that, we would go to elections," Nikolic explained his position. He also said that his party is seeking a spring ballot in Serbia "since it wishes to show its strength", but when asked whether he would join the Democrats (DS) in a government formed afterwards, Nikolic said he is "not thinking about that". "First, we must hold elections. After that it needs to be determined if there is any need for [these] two parties to be in a coalition, since I expect both will be close to the 50 percent of the votes and that one or two minor parties would decide who would rule." Nikolic also said that he does not see any reason for a DS/SNS coalition, but that "some difficult situation in the country" could lead to this. He told the newspaper that he "still believes in the right front with the popular [coalition] parties", but that Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica "is an obstacle to this".
