Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has announced a "resolute showdown" with organized crime in 2009. According to local Palma Plus television in Jagodina, Dacic, who on Saturday visited nearby Cupija, said that a new law on confiscation of illegally obtained assets will come into force next year. Dacic pledges to fight organized crime "That will be one of the great blows to organized crime, which has challenged the state and the whole nation," he said. "You see criminals walking the streets freely with their security, and you see that it is perhaps more alluring for our children to be criminals, than to work for the state, or the army, or police. It can't continue like that. Police, the military, the judiciary and all the state organs must answer that challenge," Dacic said. He announced that his ministry will soon complete its White Book on organized crime in Serbia. "On behalf of the MUP, I can promise that no one involved in crime in the Republic of Serbia will be spared. My task is also to change the overall status and position of the members of police. Police will do everything for this country and this people, police must obey the law, respect basic human rights, but police must also be respected by the state," the interior minister said.
