While the SPS says the LDP is an unacceptable partner, the two parties are participating together in 3 municipal govts. The Democratic Party (DS), Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have reached power-sharing deals in the Belgrade municipalities of New Belgrade, Rakovica and Vozdovac. SPS, LDP collaborating at municipal level The same parties are also negotiating to form a ruling coalition in Palilula. The SPS say that cooperation with the LDP is part of an agreement with the DS which has the right to choose its own partners. As the SPS continues to ruminate over a coalition in Belgrade, the capital’s municipalities, one by one, are receiving new authorities made up of the DS, the SPS, and the LDP. After New Belgrade and Rakovica, the DS, SPS and the LDP look likely to form a ruling majority in Palilula. “I cannot say so for sure. But we respect the right of our coalition partner, the DS, to choose its partners, and the LDP has representatives in the municipality of Palilula, and they have the right to participate in the ruling majority if they reach an agreement with the DS, in the same way other parties also have the right to participate in the authorities, provided they make an agreement with us. The doors are open, not shut, neither on our side, nor the DS’s,” says SPS councilor in Palilula Ljubisa Djurovic. Palilula’s DS board say that they first signed an agreement with the SPS and then with the LDP, and claim that there should be no problems in terms of cooperation. “We made an agreement, and I, as the future municipal president, have taken it upon myself to coordinate the work between all these parties. Knowing all the people involved, I’m convinced that it will function pretty well, as, essentially, I believe that the quality of people and their expertise is more important than party affiliation,” stresses Danilo Basic from the DS. The DS has applied a similar formula in Vozdovac. The SPS Vozdovac board sees the LDP as merely topping up the DS quota. “We’ve decided to cooperate with the DS in the interests of Vozdovac. As for the LDP, that’s not a question you should be asking me, but the DS,” says Dusan Jelicic from the SPS. The LDP claims that cooperation is a necessity in this situation. “If we support this government, we need to cooperate. How exactly— ask me that in six months,” says the LDP’s Ratko Bukvic.

The DS has applied a similar formula in Voždovac. The SPS Voždovac board sees the LDP as merely topping up the DS quota.
