Croatian Ambassador to Belgrade Tonci Stancic Thursday spoke about Zagreb's recognition of Kosovo. Earlier this month, Croatia recognized Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of independence. Ambassador: Croatia pressured, not forced on Kosovo Now Stancic admits that "international pressure was made on Zagreb to recognize Kosovo", but at the same time denies that this former Yugoslav republic was forced to do so "in order to join NATO". “International pressure were made, but we did not make haste because of the very respect we have for Serbia and our partnership," Stancic said in an interview for the Frankfurt-based Serbian language daily Vesti. He also "expressed hope that Zagreb's decision would not jeopardize the relations between the two countries". Adding that Croatia will be invited to join NATO "in a couple of days", the diplomat said that his country “could have waited and recognized Kosovo after that, but it wanted to demonstrate that the two issues were not linked.” “Our relations with Serbia date from the time when NATO did not even exist, and they are much more complex than some of those looking from the outside can imagine,” Stancic added.
