The parliament is discussing the proposed law on the new passports, due to be issued as of next year. The proposal calls for all current passports issued by the Republic of Yugoslavia be replaced with new Serbian passports by December 31, 2008. DSS: Serbian passports to all Serbs The new passports are scheduled to be issued starting March 1, 2008 and are all expected to be distributed by the end of the year. New passports will contain chips for automatic, computerized reading of personal information in which alphanumerical information is submitted, along with protective elements. The adoption of this law is one of the main assignments in the process of European integration, along with laws regarding asylum, state borders and foreigners. During the discussion today, Interior Minister Dragan Jocic expounded on the law’s content saying that the technological protection of the new traveling documents is one of the important conditions for getting nearer to the EU white Schengen list. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) proposed an amendment to the law according to which all ethnic Serbs without registered residence in Serbia will be granted Serbian citizenship, all the maintaining that received in their current state of residence. The competent parliamentary committee adopted the amendment that will be incorporated in the draft law. Another amendment tabled by the DSS has been accepted, stipulating that says a member of another nation or ethnic community can apply for Serbian citizenship within two years after the law comes into force, which would limite the rights of foreigners to acquire Serbian citizenship. The new passports are scheduled to be issued starting March 1, 2008 and are all expected to be distributed by the end of the year.

New passports will contain chips for automatic, computerized reading of personal information in which alphanumerical information is submitted, along with protective elements.

The adoption of this law is one of the main assignments in the process of European integration, along with laws regarding asylum, state borders and foreigners.
