Serbia introduces new ID cards in fall

The laws within the package should provide the basis for the implementation of the Visa Relaxations Agreement Serbia initiated with the European Commission in May.

“They pertain to cross-border management, asylum procedures, and foreigners residing in Serbia. After the laws have been adopted, the Serbian Government will meet with the European Commission delegation to officially sign the Agreement in September,” Đelić said.

“I would like to exclusively announce that the ID cards in line with European standards will likely be ready by the fall, while new passports will have to wait until March 2008,” he added.

According to him, a plan to put Serbia on the so-called white Schengen list might be “extremely ambitious”. However, the minister added that concrete measures were already undertaken.

“The most important thing is that the dialogue on the issue has already begun. I’ve talked to Franco Frattini, EU Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security, and for the first time in the history of Serbia-EU relations, he formally made room for talks on the subject,” Đelić explained.

He said that the Serbian government formed a working group that will travel to Portugal this month, led by Interior Ministry representative Dražen Maravić.

Đelić attended a farewell party Sunday organized for 300 of the most successful Serbian students set to tour the European Union as part of the "Traveling to Europe" project sponsored by the European Movement in Serbia.
