NATO backs UN Resolution for Kosovo
NATO spokesman James Appathurai said the alliance backed Ahtisaari's proposal — known as Plan A — and warned that a delay could exacerbate divisions within its 26 member states."Nobody wants a situation in which there would be no Security Council resolution, because this would risk differences in views ... within Europe and potentially within NATO," he told journalists.
"That is why everybody wants Plan A," Appathurai said. "We need a political road that will ... ensure the unity of the European Union and NATO on this issue."
The defense ministers of Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro also participated in high-level meetings at NATO HQ.
“This is a big day for Serbia. Participation in a ministerial meeting in NATO is a big thing for our country because we have finally managed to find ourselves in a position to equally participate,” Defense Minister Dragan Šutanovac said.
Three ex-Yugoslav countries became members of NATO's Partnership for Peace last November at the alliance's summit in Riga, Latvia.
Thursday, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said that the members of NATO support the work of UN Kosovo envoy Martti Ahtisaari and believe that his plan offers the greatest likelihood of a peaceful and progressive Kosovo.
Speaking at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Scheffer added that the organization is paying careful attention to ongoing talks in New York and elsewhere.
In addition, Scheffer stressed that the NATO countries are prepared to participate in the enforcement of the Kosovo status decision in close cooperation with the UN and EU.
He added that NATO and KFOR are entirely ready to handle the challenges of security in Kosovo, observing that NATO operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo clearly show that the 21th century necessitates mobile and efficient fighting forces.
