Canada has recognized the southernmost of the former Yugoslav states under its constitutional name of Macedonia. The country's name has been a subject of an ongoing, 16-year dispute between Skopje and Athens. Canada recognizes Macedonia's name The Greek authorities reject their neighbor's name on grounds that this is also the name of Greece's northern province, ancient homeland of Alexander the Great. "The government of Canada has decided to recognize Macedonia under its constitutional name, which will from now on be used in all bilateral ties," an official with the Canadian ministry of foreign affairs was quoted Thursday. While NATO, the EU and UN use the FYROM acronym, standing for, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the United States, Russia, China, and some EU countries, as well as Serbia, use the name Macedonia in bilateral communication. The government in Athens has recently hinted it could move to block Macedonia's EU and NATO membership unless the name dispute is resolved first.
