Slovenia demolishes border bridges

Slovenia plans to shut down as many as 115 crossing points. Locals have built most of the bridges on the stretch of the river between villages of Dobovci and Bistrica so as to reach their land at the opposite bank with less effort.

According to the Ljubljana daily Delo, without the bridge in place villagers from Dobovci will have to cross at a point five kilometers away from their community.

Two bridges have so far been pulled down, and the officials of the Ministry of Public Administration have been put in charge of the works set to end in September.

“The bridges that have been torn down will not affect any of the citizens who live next to the border with Croatia,” Ljubljana police spokesman Drago Menegalija told the newspaper.

According to him, only the crossings that are not used very often and those being abused for illegal migrations and crime have been slated for removal.
