"Regional cooperation is fundamental to ensure lasting political stability, security and economic prosperity in a region whose future lies within the EU," said Barroso.

In addition to the leaders of 10 southeastern European nations, Friday's one-day summit will be attended by EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the current holder of the EU presidency.

At the summit, EU officials will reiterate the European perspective of the Balkans and review progress made by countries there towards EU membership.

"They will stress the need for maintaining the pace of reform, and their commitment to promote measures that bring the citizens of the region closer to the EU," said the statement.

The summit will bring together leaders of Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Turkey.

They will meet under the umbrella of the South-East Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP), which was launched in 1996.
