Srebrenica protesters in Sarajevo

Following Saturday’s meeting with Bosnian political leaders, Srebrenica returnees remained persistent in their threat of leaving their town if the Bosnian authorities did not meet their requests, including granting Srebrenica’s separation from the Republic of Srpska (RS).

Some 30 Srebrenica residents put up a tent camp in the centre of Sarajevo to accommodate Srebrenica’s returnees in case collective migration plan was implemented.

One of the protesters’ representatives Čamil Duraković said they were “ready to leave their homes in case Srebrenica fails to receive a district status in the near future.”

However, Republic of Srpska authorities in Banja Luka believe Srebrenica’s residents are being manipulated by the Bosniak political parties “set out to undermine constitutional order in the RS.”

Srebrenica’s citizens said on several occasions they mistrusted both the Republic of Srpska and the Federation authorities, and expected concrete action from the Office of the High Representative (OHR) in Bosnia.

The OHR is expected to gather all political leaders in Sarajevo in an bid to find the best solution for the future of Srebrenica and upgrade the standard of living in the town.
