Infrastructure Minister Velimir Ilic says all train stations in Serbia will be reconstructed by September 15, 2008. September 15, the Serbian Railways Day, is marked by Ilic's pledge that his ministry plans to "turn train stations in every city in Serbia into magnificent buildings, just as they once used to be." Train stations reconstruction announced “A station should be the most beautiful object in any town, so that we could proudly say that the railway is a sector of an extreme importance to us,” he said. Ilic also highlighted the importance of the Serbian Railways public enterprise as it "binds together the entire metal industry. " “Of course, railways are subsidized by the state, but we are looking to scale down these subsidies as years go by,” Ilic explained. However, the public enterprise managing the Serbian roads infrastructure, Roads of Serbia, whose work is also partially financed from the state budget, is not receiving the same treatment, according to the company’s director, Branko Jocic: “The Roads of Serbia hasn’t seen a dime from the budget for 13 months now,” he said, adding that the company is this year financed exclusively through road tolls, which will amount to EUR 210mn by the end of the year. “We are managing to operate without losses this year, but we will see no profits either,” Jocic added.
