Latest official figures show there are currently 826,572 persons without employment in the country. However, State Secretary with the Ministry of Economy Vladimir Ilic told a news conference in Belgrade Wednesday that the "realistic number" is at 680,000 unemployed, bringing the rate to 21.6 percent. Serbian unemployment rate at 21.6 percent Ilic explained this calculation by saying that many of those listed as unemployed only did so "for benefits", and added some 100,000 people were at the same time employed in the black market. Ilic was hopeful that "within five years the rate of unemployment could be reduced by half, for which the most important factor will be accelerated integration of Serbia into the EU," it was reported. The measures to combat unemployment will include encouraging setting up of small and medium enterprises, providing workers who have lost jobs in the privatization process with new employment opportunities, Ilic concluded.
