“To be honest, I am not worried about the budget. If you ask me whether we have the money, I will tell you that we do. But, we cannot afford to spend a dime more,” he said.

He said that pensions would be adjusted according to the costs of living and fluctuations of salaries as of 2008, since the ministry adopted a so-called Swiss model of pension accounting.

The finance minister added that the budget would this year set aside around EUR 543mn for the National Investment Plan (NIP), which is somewhat less comparing to the figure that was circulated earlier.

“We have planned to spend EUR 254mn in the first semester, as EUR 172mn  has already been spent. The NIP will be provided with EUR 296mn in funds for the second half of 2007,” he explained.

Commenting on the fact that salaries in the public sector rose amid the election campaign ahead of January 21 parliamentary ballot, Cvetković said that the state would have to implement a restrictive policy so as to secure the macroeconomic stability.
