Two bodies - of a woman and her child - have been found in a house in Sokobanja, a town in southeastern Serbia.

Mother "kills her child, then commits suicide"

According to initial reports, the mother "first hanged the 8-year-old child, and then committed suicide in the same way."

A spokesman for the Higher Prosecution, Vladimir Stanojevic, said that it is suspected that the woman, I.M., strangled the child using an extension cord, and then used the same device to hang herself.

The tragedy occurred on Tuesday evening.

The newspaper also writes that the woman left two notes - one addressed to her mother, and the other to her husband, who is a guest worker in France.

State broadcaster RTS is reporting that the police in nearby Zajecar confirmed they found the bodies, and added that the woman and the child were first reported missing on Tuesday by an as yet unknown person. It later emerged that the report was made by I.M.'s stepfather.

The police then discovered the bodies of the 8-year-old girl and her 36-year-old mother.
