Mayor of Smederevo found guilty in corruption case

She was sentenced to one year and three months in prison.

The time that Avramović spent in detention in 2005 will be included in the sentence.

Judge Dragoslav Milanović explained the verdict to say that the prosecution proved the case when it came to four patients, and failed regarding three others.

Milanović noted that the court passed the verdict according to the law that was in force when the crime was perpetrated, and that the new legislation would see the mayor spend at least two years in prison.

Avramović's lawyer said she would appeal the verdict and expressed his confidence that the Court of Appeals would free his client.

The Smederevo mayor reacted on Monday to the ruling by saying it was a disgrace for "both the prosecution and the court," and "politically motivated."

She described the verdict as "baseless," and added:

"We will certainly appeal and bring down the judgment, because it is known who the prosecutor and the judge are... They were brought on the order of the Democratic Party and its leadership, and I have proof for that."
