Croatian President Ivo Josipovic says that he and Serbian President Boris Tadic discussed the issue of persons who are in a similar situation as Tihomir Purda. He added, however, that they had not discussed the Purda case itself. Croat president: We didn’t discuss Purda Purda is a Croatian war veteran wanted by Serbia for war crimes in Vukovar in 1991. The Croatian president told the Croatian national television HRT that Croatia, on its part, requested the extradition of over 1,000 people, adding that he did not believe that Purda case could be a trigger which would make things more complicated in Croatia. "I do not believe that this case could be a trigger, but I can say that one part of Croatia's political scene used this situation for self-promotion," Josipovic stressed. He assessed that "arrest and custody are an inappropriate burden for Purda and his family, especially if he is innocent." Serbia charged Purda with war crimes committed in Vukovar in 1991. Interpol issued an international warrant for his arrest, based on which he was arrested at the Orasje border crossing between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina on January 5, 2011. He is currently held in custody in Zenica and the Bosnian court is to decide on his extradition to Serbia. Ivo Josipovic (Tanjug)
