War crimes trial for paramilitaries

The trial for nine former members of a paramilitary unit accused for war crimes against civilians in the village of Cuska near Pec in Kosovo starts today. The trial will be held before the War Crimes Chamber of the Belgrade High Court. War crimes trial for paramilitaries The indictees, members of a unit called Sakali, are charged for killing at least 43 civilians in the village Cuska, on May 14 1999. Toplica Miladinovic, Srecko Popovic, Slavisa Kastratovic, Boban Bogicevic, Zvonimir Cvetkovic, Radoslav Brnovic, Vidoje Koricanin, Veljko Koricanin and Abdulah Sokic are charged for murder, rape, looting, destroying and burning property of civilians, for robbing and spreading fear among ethnic Albanian civilians so as to force them to move to Albania. According to the indictment, the members of the unit showed extreme cruelty, brutality, insensitivity and ruthlessness, because they grabbed small children from the people and placed knifes under their throats, or shot in front of their feet and beat up some men before their women and children. The indictment states that the accused killed in a cruel and malicious way, often shooting the victims in the back after which they burned most of the bodies in order to prevent the establishing the identity of the victims. All the accused are in custody. On March 13, the Prosecution filed a request to conduct an investigation against 26 persons suspected of crimes in the village Cuska, so Interpol warrants have been issued for 17 suspects on the run. The case is a part of the extensive action of the Prosecution for events on Kosovo and Metohija in which 200 Albanian civilians were killed, and the whole criminal procedure is a result of the investigation lead by the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution together with EULEX.
