Customs officers discovered 700 dead birds which belong to protected species in a car of a Romanian citizen at Nestin border crossing. Plucked birds were placed in bags and an Institute for Nature Conservation ornithologist has determined that the birds belonged to strictly protected species. Romanian caught smuggling protected birds 14 different bird species were found in the suspect’s car. He claimed to be their owner and only had an incomplete veterinary certificate which stated that there were 350 birds of four different species, which did not match what the customs discovered. According to regulations determining the amount of compensation, the value of the dead birds is about RSD 15mn. Criminal charges have been filed against the perpetrator, the announcement reads.
