The Ministry of Justice has sent a request to Italian authorities for the extradition of Muharem Gasi. Gasi is an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo who is suspected of committing a war crime against civilians in the province during the 1999 conflict. He was arrested in Rimini on July 11. Serbia officially seeks extradition of ex-KLA The suspect arrived to Italy as a refugee and worked there as a truck driver. Justice Minister Snezana Malovic said she expects a Bologna court of appeals to extradite Gasi to Belgrade. He joined the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in 1999 as a volunteer, and according to the Serbian War Crimes prosecution took part in an attack on a house in Berkovo, near the town of Klina, when two Serb civilians were killed, while another was injured. On April 11, 2008, an investigative judge with the War Crimes Chamber of the Belgrade District Court signed a decision to probe Gasi and two other suspects in connection to this crime. According to this document, the three arrived at the house at around 10:00 CET on June 11, 1999. One of the suspects killed his first victim in the yard, shooting him point blank in the head, while others drove the other two civilians to another house, where they killed one, and wounded another. When the second victim fell, the prosecution says, Gasi approached him and shot him again to make sure he was dead. After the investigation was launched, the Serbian state organs issued an international arrest warrant for Gasi.
