Police in Arandjelovac brutally assaulted student Nemanja Mialjevic on Monday night, though local police claim that they are not aware of the incident. The 24-year-old said that there were witnesses at the scene, in an incident reminiscent him of the behavior of police during the 1990s. Mialjevic is currently in the hospital with a broken rib, concussion and head injuries. Police accused of brutal assault Mialjevic said that the beating occurred steps away from this home. According to him, while he was giving his license and registration to the officers, after he had failed an alcohol test, another police car arrived on the scene, from which an officer came out and proceeded to beat him. “He had a blue officer’s uniform, no badge, and black boots, without any signs that he was a traffic policeman or anything for that matter. He hit me several times, after which the three other cops took me to the fence in front of my home, I then reacted by covering my face with my hands so I could not see who exactly was hitting me at that point,” Mialjevic said. “Then the third person, that came from the other car, Petovic, told me to get on the ground, face first, and I got down on my hands and knees, after which they started kicking me in the ribs and legs,” Mialjevic said. He said that they stopped hitting him when he called for his father. His fathe, Bosko Mialjevic. said that he immediately called the local police chief and said that “the police should protect the people, not beat them.” Mialjevic reported the assault and was then taken to the hospital. Eyewitnesses were on the scene, but said they did not get involved because they too were afraid of the police. The local police told B92 only that an internal investigation was ongoing and that nothing will be known regarding the circumstances of the assault until the investigation is completed.
