Boris Tadic stated in Smederevo on Thursday that the Serbian government will invite a tender for a strategic partner for the Smederevo steel plant. He added that the government's decision "to stand behind the factory" would prove "right and profitable". Govt. to call tender for steel plant next week Tadic's visit to the company, town, and surrounding villages came in his capacity as president of the republic, in what he described as "the last day of the presidential term". The leader of the ruling Democrats resigned in order to enable for early presidential elections to be held on May 6. “During the next week, the government will call a tender. I am an optimist although at one moment it looked different,” Tadic said after touring the factory. He expects that a partner for the steel plant will be found soon, adding that it would be good if the partner could have "its own coke ovens", as that would make the Serbian steel plant more competitive. The company was sold to U.S. Steel in 2003, but earlier this year the Americans decided to sell it back to the state for the symbolic price of one U.S. dollar. Tadic stated today that it would be great if the partner could introduce the process of galvanization so that the sheets which are produced in Smederevo could be used for car shells produced in Serbia. Tadic thanked the managers of the company and the Ministry of Finance for preserving jobs in the plant at a difficult and risky moment when the U.S. Steel company decided to pull out due to global conditions in the steel market. “There are times when the state has to stand behind a company. However, there are limits. Everyone needs to be aware of the costs, and therefore it is up to all of us, the company and the government to find a partner which would open perspective for the steel plant as soon as possible,” Tadic said. He underlined that the Smederevo steel plant is a strategic company, which bears on its back the entire metal industry, noting that the plant places a large percentage of its products in the Serbian market, and that many other domestic companies depend on it. This is exactly why the state has to help the steel plant and possess a strategy for the development of the metal industry, he added. Boris Tadic (R) is seen in Smederevo on Thursday (Tanjug) Tanjug
