Wheat price negotiations fail President of the Farmers Association of Serbia Bogdan Suljmanac told B92 ahead of the meeting today that there would be no protests or blockades during the negotiations, and that he was optimistic ahead of the today’s meeting. Suljmanac believes that an agreement on one of their requests, which he considers a "burning issue", will be easily reached, and said it was for the wheat price to be set at RSD 15 per kilogram. He stressed that there were hints that the farmers would meet with representatives of other ministries in the next several days in order to negotiate other requests. Some of them were an urgent suspension of import of milk, pork and beef, as well as issues concerning purchase of agricultural products and combat against monopoly in the market. The farmers also want new legislation on incentive funds and reduction of paperwork needed for subsidies. Farmers from Vojvodina, in northern Serbia, blocked some roads with combine harvesters and tractors yesterday, but did not disrupt traffic. Meanwhile, Tanjug reports that the Directorate for Commodity Reserves will purchase part of the 2010 mercantile wheat crop at a subsidized price of RSD 12 per kilogram, considering the difficult situation in agriculture and problems with this year's harvest. The Ministry of Trade and Services also said that this price was 20 percent above the market price at the Novi Sad Commodity Exchange at the time of the purchase. At a meeting of representatives of the Directorate for Commodity Reserves, the Ministry of Agriculture and associations of primary agricultural producers, it was explained that the Directorate will aid the primary agricultural sector by acquiring an additional quantity of mercantile wheat in exchange for inputs.
