Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas said that the construction of the Belgrade metro would begin in two years. He said at the EBRD General Assembly conference in Zagreb that according to expert estimates, the construction of the first three lines of the Belgrade metro will definitely cost more than EUR 1bn. He said that according to estimates, the construction of a kilometer of the metro going above ground would cost EUR 50-60mn, while the underground tracks could cost up to three times that much depending on the terrain. Djilas said that most of the metro in the center of Belgrade would have to be underground, but would be above ground in New Belgrade. During the preliminary studies, there will be discuss of potential financiers, and after that, there will be an agreement signed with a clear plan for what will be done with the Belgrade metro over the next ten years, Djilas said. He said that Belgrade would need the state’s help for the project. Djilas attended a roundtable discussion of mayors from European cities at the EBRD conference in Zagreb, adding that it was a good chance to hear the experiences of other cities in their efforts to emerge from the economic crisis. He said that Belgrade, despite the situation in the region and Serbia over the last two years, has successfully realized investments, adding that the EBRD is a serious partner in constructing Belgrade’s infrastructure.
