Serbians who have deposits in Greek banks need not worry, outgoing Governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Radovan Jelasic says. This is because these financial institutions were liquid and solvent, he explained, and added that there was no threat that the Greek crisis would have a negative impact on Serbia's financial sector. “Greek crisis won't influence Serbia” Jelasic underscored that the NBS has regular contacts with the central bank of Greece and the country's banks which do business in Serbia, as well as with the IMF and the World Bank. He told news reporters in Podgorica, Montenegro, that Serbia's central bank has already presented the Serbian government with the proposal of anti-crisis measures for the financial sector. Jelasic announced that the NBS will inform the Serbian government in June that the inflation has reached the limit of six (plus-minus two) percent, but that it may additionally increase due to price hikes. Commenting on the recent decisions of the NBS to raise the credit limit for citizens, Jelasic pointed out that although banks are not obliged to increase the limit, they can do that depending on their business policy. At the start of the crisis, the NBS introduced measures for decreasing the indebtedness of citizens, but now it is trying to stimulate the credit activity of the banks so as to encourage the demand, he explained.
