Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic says that Serbia will not pay for the swine flu vaccines that have not been delivered. Serbia ordered three million doses from Swiss company Novartis, but decided to cancel the order after 875,500 units were delivered. Serbia “only to pay for delivered vaccines” “The contract does not say anything about penalties, it says that what is delivered to the country must be paid. We paid for what has been delivered, we will not pay for the rest,” Milosavljevic told B92. The warning issued by Novartis that only “reliable” countries will have priority in purching vaccines in the future, was described as “unethical behavior” by the minister. He said that there still was an epidemic in the country, but that it was declining. “It is hard to give a precise prognosis. There is still a risk and it is not possible to predict how the epidemic situation will develop,” the minister stated. He added that 2.2 percent of the population had been vaccinated so far, which would not be enough to stop the spreading of the virus if it became active again in February and March. Milosavljevic advised citizens to continue with vaccination and pointed out that there were still 300,000 doses available.
