Austrian low cost air carrier NIKI, owned by former Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda, is starting a direct Belgrade-Vienna service on February 1. Simultaneously with the lifting of the visa regime, the news came that Serbians will be able to travel to some European destinations much cheaper than before. NIKI flies to Vienna from February 1 The first plane of the one of the top European low cost airlines will take off from Belgrade on February 1 next year. The ticket will be priced EUR 29, all taxes included. NIKI Luftfahrt – Austria's second-largest airline by revenue – is expecting that 80,000 passengers will fly from Belgrade to Vienna during the first year. “I wanted to come to Belgrade a year and a half ago, but it was not possible then. Now we have the Open Skies Agreement and visas are no longer a problem, “ said owner Niki Lauda. “It is a big advantage to be the first in a market. Coming in first is my life philosophy,” the former Formula 1 ace commented. “The advantage is also the initial price of EUR 29 which is rising the later you reserve your ticket, but even with the highest price we will still be 45 percent cheaper than the competition,” Lauda said. With this, the number of return Belgrade-Vienna flights will increase to 33 each week, averaging five flights a day. “Concerning Nikola Tesla Airport and its business, this is commercially very important for us. Our aviation authorities have started implementing the Open Skies Agreement, the market has been liberalized and Nikola Tesla Airport is for its part doing everything possible to make Belgrade an attractive destination for the airlines,” said the airport's Deputy General Manager Velimir Radosavljevic. NIKI is not a typical low cost airline because its passengers will have free snacks and drinks aboard the plane, and they do not pay extra for luggage weighing over 20kg. The airline's offer is expected to expand considering the fact that NIKI flies to all big European cities such as Rome, Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich, Munich, Moscow and others. Meanwhile, Serbia's national carrier Jat Airways also announced on Monday that they would be "selling tickets starting from EUR 19 for flights from Belgrade to the Schengen destinations“.
