The car industry is Serbia's biggest chance for a mid-term reduction of the trade deficit, Minister of Economy Mladjan Dinkic says. At a conference entitled, "Facilitating International Market Access for Manufacturers and Suppliers in the Automotive Industry in Serbia", Dinkic said that taking into account the new planned investments, the ministry is certain that this will be a sector which will generate an export worth "several billions of euros per year". "Auto industry could reduce trade deficit" Reiterating that the total revenue from the car industry in 2008 was EUR 900mn, Dinkic said that the country regards the car industry "as the most perspective" and therefore "particularly stimulates it". He said that about 150,000 workers earn their living in the sector and that 86 companies belong to that industry, one third of which foreign – mainly from Slovenia, Germany and Italy. Dinkic said that an increasing number of EU companies are interested in the production of car parts in Serbia because of lower costs, but also because of the possibility to export to CEFTA countries, the EU and Russia.
