Agriculture Minister Sasa Dragin said that farming is the only branch of the industry that has been filling the budget during the economic crisis. In an interview with daily Vecernje Novosti, Dragin called on all buyers to split the risks with the farmers, in order to help them make it out of this difficult year successfully. Agriculture continues to contribute to budget “If they do not do that, they will have their own problems next year, because they will not have anyone to buy anything from,” Dragin said. He said that farmers choose their own crops, and the state is their to help financially, to protect him from disloyal competition, low quality products, and dumping prices from imports. “The fact that I cannot influence the prices is my biggest frustration. The farmer goes into debt, makes a business plan, and then the price of wheat on the world market is the lowest it has been in history. That does not make me happy, but it is the reality,” Dragin said. He said that the realistic needs of Serbian agriculture are at a level of six percent of the total state budget. “We would be happy with four-five percent, which is the European standard. I honestly hope that it will be achievable realistically, because we have really seen results, which was confirmed by the European Commission's report as well,” Dragin said. “Ever dinar invested in agriculture returns five dinars to the state. We are subsidizing farmers with EUR 140 per hectare, and in EU countries that number goes up to EUR 300. The subsidies will be much greater when the European funds open up to us,” Dragin told the daily. Sasa Dragin (FoNet archive)
