New car sales in Serbia have risen for the fourth consecutive month, writes daily Vecernje Novosti. 3,801 cars were sold in April, 25 percent up on March. "New car sales bullish in face of recession" At a time when new car sales are slowing in virtually all the other countries in the region, dealers and importers explain the relatively positive situation on the Serbian market on the numerous campaigns and discounts that have been on offer since the winter. The Belgrade motor show at the end of March and early April is also likely to have had a bearing on the upturn in sales, with many dealers having sold out their forecourts, offering huge discounts along the way. The majority of importers say that the discounts are almost at an end and that the price of new cars is likely to settle in the coming period, and that savings will be made in other areas: salary cuts, staff cutbacks, scaling down marketing activities, and so on. Nevertheless, the general prediction is that sales will continue to rise in May, with the expected increase in new Puntos—some 1,000—on the market. In April, only 170 new models reached their buyers, not because a lack of stock, but because buyers and dealers were still “getting used“ to the “old for new“ system. The most popular car in Serbia in April was the Dacia, with 410 models sold.
