Russian Gazpromneft intends to take over the Serbian Oil Industry’s (NIS) entire operations by Friday, says Gazprom Deputy CEO Dmitry Malishev. He said that the first step would be scheduling a meeting with NIS shareholders and electing a new board of directors, which will include Gazpromneft representatives. Gazpromneft to take over NIS by Friday “Gazpromneft’s aim is to create a constructive dialogue with NIS shareholders about jointly managing the company’s assets,” said Malishev, who, according to earlier reports, is set to become the new chairman of the NIS board of directors. The first steps will be, he says, reconstruction and modernization of NIS’s technical network, in compliance with the signed agreements. “That modernization program prescribes expanding the capacity of NIS’s refineries in order to produce oil of European quality,” said Malishev. He added that EUR 400mn had been transferred yesterday to a foreign currency account at the National Bank of Serbia, paying for Gazpromneft’s 51 percent stake in the company. Serbia and Russia signed an agreement to sell NIS on Dec. 24, 2008, stipulating that Gazpromneft should invest no less than EUR 547mn in NIS by 2012.
