The U.S. aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford is set to be deployed to the Middle East from Venezuela, the New York Times reported today, citing unnamed U.S. officials.
The Gerald R. Ford carrier and its accompanying vessels are currently deployed in the Caribbean. Once sent to the Middle East, they are expected to remain there until the end of April or early May.
The ship’s crew was reportedly informed of the deployment decision on Thursday.
They will join the Abraham Lincoln carrier in the Persian Gulf to increase pressure on Iranian leaders.
The Gerald R. Ford departed from a Virginia port on June 24 last year to cruise European waters, but was redirected to the Caribbean to exert pressure on Venezuela.
The aircraft that took off from this aircraft carrier were used in an operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
