This would happen if US President Donald Trump ordered the resumption of military operations, CNN reported today, citing several US officials familiar with the matter.

The use of the GBU-43/B bomb, the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal, in the conflict with Iran would represent a significant escalation of the conflict, CNN assesses.

However, according to several sources familiar with internal military discussions about the possible use of this weapon, there are doubts about how effective it would be in achieving Trump's strategic objectives or shifting the balance of power in the war.

One source said that Trump had instructed the military to prepare additional plans for strikes against Iranian targets, including a "significant portion of the energy infrastructure," as well as the possible use of the aforementioned bomb.

The same source stated that the plans specify that the attacks would take place before US forces withdraw from the area of responsibility of US Central Command (CENTCOM), suggesting that the Trump administration could launch additional strikes, attempt to declare victory, and then rapidly withdraw all its forces.

Another source said that military plans for strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities also explicitly include the use of the GBU-43/B bomb.

An unnamed US official noted that, when planning operations, the military prepares a whole range of options for decision-makers, from the most intensive to the less aggressive.

Targets requiring greater firepower, including those located deep underground, call for the use of larger bombs, and the GBU-43/B is the largest of them, the official added.

Although the bomb, which is guided by GPS, is capable of destroying an area equivalent to nine city blocks, sources say it is unlikely to be capable of penetrating deep enough underground to destroy nuclear facilities believed to be protected by layers of granite.
