Army reduces number of tanks

Each of KoV’s four brigades will incorporate one tank and two mechanized battalions, Kolundžija said.

Future tank battalions will be organized according to the British model, and will operate 53 tanks each, deployed in four units (command tank, and four units with 13 tanks each), while mechanized battalions will feature 40 vehicles (command offensive infantry vehicle, four units with 13 vehicles, along with a support unit).

The battalions will also be comprised of a command unit with reconnaissance, engineering, liaison and logistics capabilities, Kolundžija explained.

M-84s tanks look set to remain operational, along with a small portion of T-72s and BVP M-80 A APCs. The obsolete T-55 and most T-72 tanks will be withdrawn from service.

The KoV reorganization is part of the broader armed forces reform in Serbia.
