NATO to treat Russia "more as adversary than partner"

NATO will have to treat Russia more as an adversary rather than a partner, he was quoted as saying.
“Clearly the Russians have declared NATO as an adversary, so we have to begin to view Russia no longer as a partner but as more of an adversary than a partner,” Vershbow said.
“In central Europe, clearly we have two different visions of what European security should be like," he said, and added that the alliance “still would defend the sovereignty and freedom of choice of Russia's neighbors."
He then accused Moscow of “trying to re-impose hegemony and limit their sovereignty under the guise of a defense of the Russian world.”
NATO suspended “practical civilian and military cooperation” with Moscow in April, Itar-Tass reported, but Russia maintained its diplomatic mission in Brussels open.
Vershbow said the alliance is considering deployment of additional forces in eastern Europe permanently or on a rotation basis, in particular, to strengthen the security of the Baltic states.
“We want to be sure that we can come to the aid of these countries if there were any, even indirect, threat,” he said.
Simon Saradzhyan, an expert on Russian security policy, said it's doubtful that Vershbow's view that Russia is now an adversary of the Western alliance will be embraced by NATO's other major powers.
He said he doubts Germany and France, which have substantial economic and business ties to Russia, would do so, the AP reported.
"If NATO were to officially designate Russia as an adversary, Moscow likely would retaliate by cutting off avenues of cooperation, including the use of Russian territory for the movement of war material in or out of Afghanistan," Saradzhyan, assistant director of the U.S.-Russia Initiative to Prevent Nuclear Terrorism at Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, said.
Russia said to the US at the start not to go to Afghanistan because they were there for 10 years and left without achieving their objectives and ended bankrupting their country. How much plainer could that advice have been??? Moscow was frank about losing in Afghanistan, but not the US of Piss and Wind – they can win with freedom and democracy and rule of law LOL.
(sj, 6 May 2014 02:26)
Oh, now everything makes sense... Thanks sj for giving us the secret background of what happened in 2001. Russia, as the biggest friend of US, gave to the US valuable advice, but the US did not pay attention to the advice of their Russian friends who only think about the US well-being day and night.

Too bad for you that Greece is not geographically closer to Russia. Its army could have come and saved you from the hundreds of billion euros of EU tax payers :). You ruined the party for everybody else that is coming after you also, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, etc etc.

Considering the EU/USA financed the coup on Kiev
(Leonidas, 5 May 2014 16:43)
That can't be true, because the CE of B92 forums sj had already ruled before the coup that the EU/USA had collapsed and run out of cash. In addition, according always to the CE of B92 forums sj, Russia is the country with cash so the only conclusion is that Russia financed the coup in Kiev (always according to the brilliant analysis of the CE of B92 forums sj).

and US/Nato's decision to place missiles on Ukraine's border with Russia, what did you expect Russia to do? Did you just expect her to roll over and get her stomach tickled?
(Leonidas, 5 May 2014 16:43)
address it with the country where the missiles were placed (i.e. not Ukraine). What did Russia expect? Did it expect Ukraine to solve the missiles problem for Russia :) The lack of logical connections in your arguments is astonishing...

My money is with Putin taking the best bits of the country back under Russian persuasion and leaving the nazi trash and their debts for the west to sort out and my is going to cost the EU some very serious money.

You are correct.... that's why Serbia is lucky not to be close to its Slavic "brother" :)
(icj1, 6 May 2014 05:32)
Russia does not care about the Greeks as it was clearly shown not long ago when the bankrupt Greeks begged Russia for help and were shown the door even though according to the CE of B92 forums sj Russia has a lot of cash. But, again, I certainly don't expect you to show some respect for yourself - so go and beg Russia again :)

Yes there are other routes such as Pakistan, Iran or drilling through the earth and coming out in New York. Which do you think is better? Perhaps you might ask the reason why NATO avoids Pakistan. Russia is not the Soviet Union so it does not want Afghanistan. The only reason the west went into Afghanistan was for Caspian Sea oil and gas to bypass Russian territory. It has nothing to do with 9/11 at all. That was a convenient excuse. Even George W Bush was entertaining the Taliban at his Texas ranch in the late 1980s to try and convince them to allow a pipelines through Afghanistan.
NATO is a spent force and only kept around because of the US, but that will end soon. How long do you think the US will continue to borrow to fight losing wars????? I hear NATO is in the Baltics just in case those pesky Russians decide to invade New Arizona LOL.
Why sanctions will never work on Russia? Simply because Asia has all the cash and they have no interest in western BS.
(sj, 6 May 2014 02:26)
The b92 english forum is the only place in the world where Albanians get to mock Greeks for being poor, people with no self-respect, genetically close to the Turks and so on. Everywhere else in the world it's the other way round.
(thanasis, 5 May 2014 23:31)
How will NATO continue to deliver food and equipment to its troops in Afghanistan considering the only safe way is over Russian territory??????? Or even better what route do they propose to take towards the end of this year when they leave Afghanistan? Dig a tunnel and hope to come out in New York?
(sj, 5 May 2014 09:48)
There are other routes in and out of Afghanistan but it is easier through Russia. But the best thing and hopefully the true thing that will happen is NATO will abandon Afghanistan and leave it for Russia to deal with. Russia wants NATO there to keep them busy so as not to influence the Muslim resistance within their boundaries.
But Russia is the only ones that can handle Afghanistan as they proved with their invasion during the peak of Russia's military years. What do you call that exit strategy they used? I think it is called leaving with your tail between your legs.

(Rocky, 5 May 2014 14:11)
No, you recall wrongly.Ancient Sparta had nothing to do with democracy.Furthermore, your comparison of Russia with Persia shows why the Albanian sheeple are still hundreds of years behind understanding contemporary politics.Identifying the Ukrainian Benderistas and the rest of the fascist thugs as some kind of democratic knights further re-enforces that view.
Considering the EU/USA financed the coup on Kiev and US/Nato's decision to place missiles on Ukraine's border with Russia, what did you expect Russia to do? Did you just expect her to roll over and get her stomach tickled? The bad news is that “this clown” is the best of the clowns available. The rest are even worse .. Alexander was the least Russophobe Ambassador to Russia in this century. But I guess we should stop paying attention to persons and take the western elites as a hostile regiment. Inside there can be better people and worse ones. But we should not rely on it for in war time they all act like the militaries should do.
With Ashton’s statement EU went on mudding itself. But because the inevitable defeat of the regime is just a matter of time I think that it only means that the decision to sacrifice Ukraine is already taken. General Krutov appointed as the main hangman in Slaviansk demanded USD 5 Bln. and US passports for his family members.
All the officers were promised Polish or Lithuanian passports plus up to 10 000 Euro. It means that morally they are ready to the defeat. The prices jumped today after 3 helicopters were drown down. Another ne landed close to the hit one. They took the pistols and left there one killed pilot and one wounded. After that other pilots refused to fly so Kolomoisky had to raise the salaries.
As a result out of the USD 3,2 Bln. received today from IMF thy cannot afford paying Gazprom’s bills. I do not understand why Miller is so slow to put Europe on it’s knees.

Problem with the clowns is that they are never funny.

Clearly the Russians have declared NATO as an adversary, so we have to begin to view Russia no longer as a partner but as more of an adversary than a partner,” Vershbow said.
This clown is not ashamed at all of lying in a very public manner. It's not Russia who's trying to install missiles on Nato borders but the other way round.According to Helmut Schmidt(former German Chancellor)the West promised Russia back in 1989,there would be, in Scmidt's words, “no extension of NATO’s jurisdiction for forces of NATO one inch to the east,” provided the Soviets agreed to the NATO membership of a unified Germany. Moscow would think about it, Gorbachev said, but added: “any extension of the zone of NATO is unacceptable.”
It seems Nato warmongers haven't realised that Russia is neither Serbia,Libya or Afganistan-though the latter has defeated Nato comprehensibly.Russia can inflict,if they choose to,immense damage to EU without even firing a shot.By cutting off energy supplies to EU countries they can inflict mass unemployment and economic suffering. The five countries that comprise the BRICS have half of the world’s population. They can conduct their economic affairs without the dollar.

Considering the EU/USA financed the coup on Kiev and US/Nato's decision to place missiles on Ukraine's border with Russia, what did you expect Russia to do?

True, but NATO did extend not because they broke the promise, but because the former Warsaw conutries wanted to join NATO,otherwise they will be next in line after Ukraine.
If Poland,Estinonia,Lithuania,Latvia and othe estern countries wouldn't join NATO,Russia would have attack them using russian minorities as the pretext.

I know a lot of asian greeks feel very attached to Russia, but Russia can not be a leader of the world.
USA has four things that attract people,Dollar as a common comodity,English as commerce language, the USA Army and Holliwood who make people think about American dream.
Until BRICS countries have those four things they can not replace USA."BRICKS Dream" Big lol.
Secondly, people have fresh memories how "happy" the life was under Russia empire.Ask Poles and Hungarians.

Putin could also seize all foreign assets in Russia and rapidly complete the arrangements with China, India, Brazil, and South Africa to abandon the use of the US dollar in international settlements. The US dollar as world reserve currency is the source of American imperialism. The five countries that comprise the BRICS have half of the world’s population. They can conduct their economic affairs without the dollar.

You follow the Enverian script to the letter- modern Albanians are racially pure descendants of ancient ethnic groups -which of course are nothing more than extreme fantasies of Albanian nationalists.Your rejection of any historical and cultural connection between Albania and Turkey makes a mockery of history written by the Ottomans and also the presence of millions of Albanians in modern Turkey.
As fas as the Greeks are concerned there has been plenty of genetic studies which suggest modern Greeks are even biologically related to pre-Greek neolithic societies in the region (see Cavalli-Sforza's Gene's Peoples and Languages). This makes perfect sense given ancient Greeks didn't simply appear from nowhere and disappear into nowhere. (not to mention modern Greek language and culture is clearly derived from earlier forms of Greek). While the idea of pure races are the fantasies of extreme nationalists there is a flow of history and archaeology.Nations and history are not a fiction.

Its always humerous to read someone writing on a subject they have no idea about. Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary have all become part of the glorious EU since 2004. Now that is 10 years and they have gone backwards in most areas of endevour.
What you dont understand is that before 2008 the EU was pumping money into these economies and living standards did improve with the combined real estate boom of that time. In fact Romania was called the Economic Tiger of the Balkans.
If your prediction was to come true then the EU would have to pump money into Albania and Bulgaria for the next four decades – do you see Brussels doing that? I dont. The way Serbia is going it’s more likey your Albanians will try and beg for work in Serbia.
