NEW YORK The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will on Thursday in New York vote on Palestine's bid to upgrade its status to a non-observer state. The Palestinian Authority officially submitted its draft resolution late on Monday. UN General Assembly to vote on Palestinian bid The Jerusalem Post reported on its website, quoting an Israeli official, that this came despite the fact that "the U.S. was working actively in the UN to try and use procedural measures to block (Mahmoud) Abbas from even being able to bring the resolution to a vote". The official was also quoted as saying that the U.S. was "working in various key capitals around the world to convince other countries not to support it". Palestine is currently an observer at the UNGA, and will need a simple majority of votes to upgrade its status. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will address the assembly, where 193 states are represented, ahead of the vote on Thursday. There is no right of veto in this UN body, and observers expect the resolution to pass. If it does, it will grant Palestine the same status as that enjoyed by the Vatican.
