Serbia booked a place in Sunday's final with a straight-sets defeat of two-time defending champions Poland. 2006 World Championship bronze medalist Serbia bedazzled Poland on Saturday winning 27-25, 25-21, 25-21. Women's team in Euro volleyball final The Serbian team were more consistent in their all-round play, especially in the end of the first set, and caused too many problems for the Polish block with the crashing wing attacks of Jelena Nikolic, and the razor-sharp net play of captain Vesna Citakovic. Nevertheless, Dorota Swieniewicz brought up set point for the Poles at 25-24, but Citakovic in the middle and two times Nikolic on the left fought back bravely, closing it out 27-25 in Serbian’s favor. The Zoran Terzic squad maintained their fast tempo in the second set, and Poland could make no headway under this relentless pressure. When Citakovic blocked Swieniewicz again, Poland head coach Marco Bonitta was persuaded to remove the veteran from the attack, and hope that Serbia might stumble against the new Polish combinations with Milena Rosner. The Serbians were unfazed, though. Jovana Brakocevic scored with a scorcher on the right, and Nikolic struck like lightning at the net to bring up the second technical time-out with her team well in control at 16-10. Jovana Vesovic brought up set point at 24-20 with a trademark winner at the net, and a Nikolic hammer did the rest two points later. In the third set, Poland took up the challenge and led 8-7 at the first technical break, and then 12-7, to suggest a comeback was brewing. Indeed, the Poles bounced back strongly, scoring two times with Dziekiewicz on the net to take a 15-11 lead. Glinka advanced to 16-13 at the second technical time-out. But the Poles collapsed and lost six straight points to fall behind 16-19. Serbia completed the third set 25-21. The Serbian team celebrates victory over Poland (FoNet)
