Serbia celebrates Orthodox Christmas Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) leader His Holiness Patriarch Pavle warned on Jan. 5 in his Christmas message that the economic crisis is a result of a hidden spiritual and moral crisis, and is therefore a crisis of mankind itself. "It is true that the economic crisis is tied to the political crisis, and that the lack of respect for international law and ignoring the United Nations human rights charter have given birth to the political crisis, as well as this economic crisis and financial chaos," Patriarch Pavle stated. He added that the consequences of the economic and selfish interests of the powerful people who place themselves above justice and human rights, are best seen in the example of Serbia and the Serbian people. The Christmas message also warns of a new hedonistic mythology which affects the most innocent and the least resistant - children and young people. "Drugs and debauchery, equating life with instinct and satisfying the lusts of the flesh, the lust for a life of haughtiness, are all a result of these ancient myths cloaked in a new and tempting disguise," he said.
