The main news in the Slovenian press and media is yesterday’s bomb blast at the Mercator shopping center in Belgrade. The Slovenian portal 24ur.com views the attack as politically motivated, as the political scene in Serbia has been “hot” for some months, citing the expected Kosovo independence declaration and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica’s recent statement that labeled the proposed EU deal as a trick through which Serbia would be “fooled” into recognizing Kosovo independence. Slovenian press on Mercator bomb Mention is also made of the recent Slovenian diplomatic scandal “that Belgrade daily Politika took care of on Tuesday” by publishing several documents, including some secret ones that recently arrived at the Slovenian Foreign Ministry and that reveal the EU’s expectations of Slovenia’s role in problem-solving in the Balkans. Dr. Anton Bebler, a professor from the Ljubljana Social Science Faculty and president of the Slovenian Atlantic Union, told 24ur.com that the motive behind the attack could be linked to the Council of Ministers decision to send an EU mission to Kosovo, as well as Slovenia’s position on the potential declaration of independence. Bebler added that yesterday’s explosion was probably also linked to a propaganda witch hunt, led chiefly by Politika, labeling Slovenian foreign policy as anti-Serbian, while the documents published by the daily had somehow motivated those who had planted the bomb.
