President Boris Tadic and several other state officials will appear in court on Tuesday regarding the so-called “champagne scandal.” They are facing "misconduct charges" over an incident regarding the consumption of alcohol at a football match, after Serbia defeated Romania in October, which qualified Serbia for the coming 2010 World Cup in South Africa. “Champagne incident” court date set Tadic, Serbian Football Association President Tomislav Karadzic, Youth and Sports Minister Snezana Samardzic-Markovic, and Belgrade Assembly Speaker Aleksandar Antic were at the stadium when they toasted with champagne after the 5:0 victory of the Serbian national squad team. The Law on Prevention of Violence and Inappropriate Behavior at Sporting Events, prohibits distribution and consumption alcohol within a kilometer of a sports venue. If found guilty, they could face fines of in between RSD 30,000-50,000 (about EUR 325-540), or 60 days in jail.
