Moscow rejects PACE’s recommendations

MOSCOW Russia is not planning on fulfilling recommendations of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), said the Russian president’s press secretary. "We do not think that such statements and calls are appropriate. Certainly, we will not heed them," Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday. Moscow rejects PACE’s recommendations In the resolution adopted on October 2, PACE criticized Russia and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin not to strengthen the authoritarian nature of the system, but democratize it. The resolution also calls for reconsideration of the verdict in a recent court case involving the punk group Pussy Riot, who were arrested in February following a provocative performance in a church in downtown Moscow. PACE criticized the authorities for their influence on the judiciary and called on the government to renew the political dialogue with the opposition.
