China reported that its population increased by 6.3 million since last year and has reached 1.341 billion people at the end of 2010. That increase equals the number of inhabitants of a city the size of Rio de Janeiro, a modest jump for a massive population and the experts suggest China may relax with its strict “one-child policy”. Number of Chinese increases to 1.34 billion The figure was reported on the National Bureau of Statistics, marked as preliminary and based on a sample survey. A more accurate figure is expected to be released in April after the government tallies the results of its 2010 census, the first in 10 years, agencies report. The government says its family planning rules, limiting families in cities to one child and rural parents to two, have prevented more than 400 million births since it was implemented three decades ago, in 1979. At the first census in 1953, China had 594 million inhabitants, which is less than a half of current population. (Tanjug/Xinhua)
