Roadside bombs in Afghanistan killed five American soldiers Saturday while more than 50 Afghans were killed in a spate of violence across the country. Officials say three U.S. soldiers were killed by a blast in western Afghanistan, and two more in a bombing in the east. In the worst attack, the Afghan Interior Ministry said a roadside bomb killed 14 civilians in the central province of Uruzgan. Other fatal attacks were reported from the provinces of Farah and Nangarhar. A report released this week by a London-based policy institute, the International Council on Security and Development, found the Taliban has a "permanent presence" in nearly 80 percent of Afghanistan, with one or more insurgent attacks per week.
