The leaders of China and Russia have hailed what they call flourishing ties which, they say, have defied the economic crisis, at a meeting near Moscow. On a visit to Russia over the past few days, Chinese President Hu Jintao has attended two summits of developing countries on trade, security and greater representation for emerging markets in the world. China and Russia reaffirm strong ties It comes as both countries are pushing to assert their influence on the global stage. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the relationship between the two countries was now strong enough to overcome the effects of the crisis. However he did not mention figures showing how the global financial downturn has affected trade between them, which has dropped by nearly half in the first quarter of this year. China and Russia are calling for a reform of the international financial system, with more influence to be given to emerging nations. Both want their respective currencies to play a greater role, with Moscow saying the dollar has not lived up to its reputation as a reserve currency in the crisis. The Chinese leader, who also attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier at the foot fo the Kremlin walls, is also meeting President Dmitry Medvedev.
