Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It comes a day after the Fatah leader held talks in Paris with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner where he called on the EU to help in bringing about a Palestinian unity government. Abbas appeals for Palestinian unity Abbas offered an olive branch, “We have opened the door to reconciliation to end the division of Palestinans caused by the coup and the consequences of the division between the West Bank and Gaza.” The EU is the biggest donor to the Palestinians and has called on Israel to open the borders to allow reconstruction of the battered Gaza Strip. It is a territory that resembles “hell”, according to Marc Otte, the bloc’s envoy to the Middle East.
