Slovenian Foreign Minister and Head of the Slovenian EU Presidency Dimitrij Rupel says EU and U.S. leaders are to discuss the Western Balkans. On Wednesday at the European Parliament, Rupel outlined the themes that would be discussed at the upcoming meeting of EU and U.S. leaders, scheduled to take place in Brdo Pri Kranju in Slovenia next week. "EU, U.S. leaders to discuss Western Balkans" He added that Slovenia was fully prepared for the meeting that is to be attended by senior EU officials, U.S. President George Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. “It will primarily be a big demonstration of European-American friendship, and an opportunity to go through the agenda and see what’s happening in the world,“ said the Slovenian foreign minister, adding that the meeting would end with a declaration, as a concise and powerful document with strong political messages. Among the subjects under discussion, Rupel highlighted the issue of climate change, and the U.S.’s visa regime for the EU and the Western Balkans. Nevertheless, the summit is expected to focus on the issue of the visa regime, as the EU is unhappy with the lack of a common U.S. regime towards all the member-states.
