The Arab League has released worrying data on literacy in the Arab world. The League's Education, Science and Culture Organization with headquarters in Tunisia, ALESCO, made the results of its survey available. Arab League report: One in three Arabs illiterate According to this report, three-quarters of the 100 million people unable to read or write in the 21 Arab countries are aged between 15 and 45. The report was also published by the European Journalism Center, EJC, in Maastricht. Another worrying fact, highlighted in the report, is that as many as 46.5 percent of women in the region are also illiterate. ALESCO underlined that it is necessary to offer possibilities of elementary education in the Arab world, and appealed on Arab countries to dedicate themselves to educating adults "in order to avoid serious incidents in the development of Arab societies." Out of the total of 21 Arab counties, those with the lowest percentage of literate population include Egypt, Sudan, Algiers and Morocco, which are at the same time the most populous states.
