Four West Nile virus cases confirmed so far

Broken down by region, the South Banat District (northeastern Serbia) reported two cases, with the Belgrade and the Macva (northwestern Serbia) districts reporting one each.

The institute announced that in order for the West Nile virus infection to be confirmed, the patient must exhibit the disease's neuroinvasive forms - meningitis, encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, while appropriate antibodies must also be found in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid.

Mosquitoes found in Belgrade's Julino Brdo neighborhood and near the Pionir sports hall have tested positive as carriers of the virus, as did those found in Novi Sad's Rajska Street and on the Petrovaradin Fortress, in Pancevo (near Stari Tamis), and in Nadel, Omoljica, Starcevo, and Vojlovica.

These tests were carried out from July 24 until August 5, the institute said.

Most cases of West Nile virus are reported in August and September.
