The uprising was led by Djordje Petrovic, known as Karadjordje, and paved the way for the Second Uprising in 1815 that resulted in the renewal of the Serbian state.

As part of the efforts to renew the country's statehood, the First Uprising saw the establishment of many important institutions - the Great School, the predecessor of what is today the University of Belgrade, among them.

On this day in 1835, the first Constitution of the Principality of Serbia was passed in Kragujevac, known as the Sretenje Constitution. However, it was shortly afterwards suspended as it was considered "too liberal" by Austria, Turkey, and Russia.

Marking Statehood Day on Monday, President Tomislav Nikolic placed a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Mt. Avala near Belgrade, and later in the day presented Statehood Day decorations.

Labor, Social and Veteran Affairs Minister attended celebrations at the Church of St. George in Oplenac, near Topola.

Ceremonies were also held at the Old Assembly in Kragujevac, where Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic addressed those gathered.

Statehood Day is a two-day (Feb. 15 and 16) non-working holiday in Serbia.
